Tarim (2024)
dye sublimation print on fabric, wood, metal, linocut relief carving, mirrored plexiglass
20x68x25in
On the top surface, an aerial view image of the Tarim Basin, a site for a new oil extraction project in China, is printed on fabric. As the viewer looks down at the image, the black mirror reflects another landscape, of a linocut carving that is suspended face-down. The latter is based on a satellite image of the National Oil Reserves in Alaska, where the Willow Project (an approved American oil development project) is taking place. This piece explores our relationship to landscape through technological mediation -- the abstracted god-view that is only possible with drones, planes, and satellites -- and how such imagery underpins an extractive mentality.
