Conversation With Landscape - Day (2022)

Ink and acrylic on fabric, window, Hämeenkyrö

72" x 60"

Inspired by Nancy Holt's land art piece, Up and Under, I wanted to create a collaboration with the landscape itself. Stretched over three panes of the window, the painting changes with the light and weather conditions outside and throughout the day; on bright, sunny days, the ink becomes a faint outline, blown out by the light coming through, while the fluorescent lighting of the room at night puts it in stark relief, as the landscape outside fades to black. I'm interested in how this sort of "turn-taking" places the human intervention and the landscape on equal terms, rather than using the latter as a backdrop or support for an artistic vision.

I also hope that the piece can function as an invitation for slower and longer looking, rather than the sort of digitized, high-speed consumption of landscape photography that we have become inured to -- a way to reframe how we see, and therefore use, the land.
