Monument to the unseen (2026)
shou sugi-ban wood, glass vessels, silicone, tap and rain water, 12 x 23 x 74ft
Twelve pieces of wood were installed throughout a clearing, each holding a glass vessel at the top; they were filled with tap water at differing levels, then left open to the elements. The installation as a whole referenced the reservoir system in Dutchess county, first built in the late 19th century, which still feeds the city of New York. The pillars serve as memorials to the local rural communities which were displaced during the building process, and the piece as a whole stands in recognition of the way in which the landscapes upstate continue to sustain the city today.
