between these bars I find my own tongue (2026)
mild steel, rust, handmade paper (abaca, hemp, foraged bamboo and gingko leaf fibers), 12.5 x 16 x 45ft
In a hallway adjacent to a historic chapel, there are five windows that overlook the grounds and surrounding forest. The windows face both east and west orientations. The works of handmade paper hung before them are activated by sunlight at different times of day; in good weather, they begin to function as a spectral sun dial. The metal grids are made bespoke to the dimensions of the window bars, with irregular breaks that speak to questions of system, center, edge, and navigation. The bars are rusted by the pulp while wet, and the paper dries as a cast form on the steel.
